The title of the album written by Mark Stephen Jones, Travis Meadows and Bud Tower, is a reference to a comment Barack Obama made in San Francisco about small town Americans who "cling to guns or religion". Lyrically, it appears to oppose all kinds of gun control, a notable change from the lyrical stance of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd fronted by Ronnie Van Zant, who sang against handguns in the song Saturday Night Special, and suggested that all handguns be dumped in the bottom of the sea.

The album features guitar work from John 5 (John William Lowery - born July 31, 1971 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan).
